Rocked to the Bottom!

We went in hope, but left in despair, not helped by most of our rivals winning today!

A 2-0 defeat at Walsall coupled with those other results leaves Wycombe Wanderers bottom of League One and this time adrift of the safety line. The Blues cause was not helped by Matt Bloomfield being taken ill and having to leave the coach on the way up to Walsall, leaving the team plus just 4 subs..

After an even first half, the home team had a chance to take the lead early in the second half when awarded a penalty for a foul by Dave Winfield. However Nikki Bull saved the spot kick and we just wondered if it might be our day.

Despite some more encouraging play for a while, the Wanderers finally fell behind just after the hour, when everyone backed off the attacking Hurst who then fired past our keeper from 20 yards.

More attacking options were deployed with Grant and McNamee joining McClure on the pitch supporting the ever hard working Beavon but the best we got was a near miss by Matt McClure before Walsall got their second on 85 mins.

The only way is up from here and we go again at home to Hartlepool on Saturday 25th February ko 3pm.

Stay And Support The Team

(One person’s opinion)
Why oh why were our fans leaving on 85 minutes tonight?

We had just got back in the game at 2-3 and were pushing for an equaliser, yet some still feel the need to leave rather than encourage their team onto the end when we could have ‘snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat’.

It’s not like we have a 60,000 crowd leaving the Emirates Stadium with only one train line for them all. We had 3,529 fans and all who stayed were soon on the move after the game! The team could do with all possible support when pushing for what might have been a vital point and anything could happen in those last 5 minutes plus the 5 added on! It’s not like the game was done with a clear result either way!

As for the game itself, we were perhaps lucky to go in 1-0 up at half time thanks to Stuart Beavon’s clean strike from a Matty Whichelow pass. However more abject defending and a vital midfield error in losing the ball when going forward led to Yeovil scoring 3 times in 15 mins before substitute Joel Grant pulled one back soon after coming on.

But it was not to be! We go again at Walsall on Saturday – another game we really need to win!

Brave and Encouraging But Another Defeat

Wycombe bravely held out for over an hour against Sheffield United but eventually went down to a 3-0 defeat at Bramall Lane. Though at least two of their goals could go down as being slighty fortunate with deflections not helping the Blues.

From the commentary, it sounded like the more defensive formation was doing its job but when the barrier was breached, the home side went on to a comfortable victory. Stuart Beavon was his usual lively self up front and Matt Bloomfield again worked hard attacking from midfield.

Not much time to dwell on this defeat as we go again for perhaps a more important game, at home to Yeovil on Tuesday night. Kick off at Adams Park is 7.45pm

Three More Welcome Points Take Blues Out of Bottom Four

Look’s like we just got finished in time. Hope all fans got home safely last night to celebrate this latest win!

A hard fought second half  where our defensive resolve was severely tested, enabled Wycombe to take three valuable points with a 2-1 victory at home to Tranmere, on a day when their rivals either lost or didnt play.

As a result Wanderers move up to 20th position, just above that dreaded drop line. They had to recover from going one down in the 6th minute when McQuirk scored with an angled drive from all of 30 yards out. The home side took a while to get going after that but levelled midway through the half when skipper Gareth Ainsworth skipped past his man and crossed for debutant loanee Matty Whichelow to head home. Seven minutes later the Blues were ahead and this time Gaz got the final touch to score after Whichelow and Matt Bloomfield had their efforts blocked.

However after the break and with the wintry weather closing in, it was Tranmere who seemed to have all the possession with Wycombe struggling to get it clear of their goal. Twice the visitors hit the woodwork and near the end had a goal ruled out for offside. Matt Bloomfield had a good chance on a rare Blues attack but was foiled by the goalie.

Maybe we just got some of that luck that Gary Waddock was talking about last Wednesday!

Stung By The Bees

Saturday saw the Wanderers make the short trip to West London (which made a change from the M6) to take on Brentford but we came away only with a 5-2 defeat that puts Wycombe bottom of League One. However there are still only four points spanning the bottom seven teams.

Wycombe made a bright start but fell behind after 10 minutes when Gary Alexander was left unmarked to head in an easy goal from a left wing cross. Brentford doubled their lead midway through the half as Sam Saunders hit a low drive into the net after we had failed to clear the ball. But by the half hour it was three, with Alexander again  scoring from close range.

The Blues came out for the second half in a 4-4-2 formation with substitute Ainsworth on the right wing and soon they were on the scoresheet as Dave Winfield rose to head in Grant Basey’s free kick. For a while it looked like a recovery was possible but on 73 mins, Brentford restored their three goal margin thanks to Diagouraga again from close range. But Wycombe were not done yet and Ben Strevens got another goal back with a near post toe poke after Joel Grant had done good work along the goal line. However Alexander was not to be denied his hat trick and put the game beyond all doubt with a fine volley on 81 minutes. It could have been worse with other chances for the home team missed.

3 Goals and 3 Points give Everyone a Lift

Could this be the start of the recovery?

Whilst Rochdale were certainly not the best side we have faced this season, that should take nothing away from a much improved Wanderers performance today which resulted in a 3-0 home win.

The star of the show was Stuart Beavon who as usual was his tigerish self, never giving up and it was chasing a flick on, that led to him lifting the ball over the goalkeeper for the opening goal after 32 minutes.

New boy Louis Laing settled in well at the back alongside skpper Dave Winfield and it was the recalled and fit again leader who headed the ball across the penalty area to Beavon for the second goal on 73 minutes. However the way in which our leading goal scorer pulled the ball down and hooked it into the net is certainly to be admired.

Two minutes later and Winfield turned from provider to goal scorer after a Matt Bloomfield corner kick evaded everyone and fell to ‘big Dave  close to goal. He even had time to control the ball before flicking it into the net.

So three points won on a day when most of our lowly rivals drew, lifts us closer to the safety line as we move onto the short trip to Brentford next Saturday.
